چکیده

Rhesus monkeys were trained to discriminate injections of saline from those of 8-carboline-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (8-CCE), a compound that binds to the benzodiazepine receptor, but often has actions opposite to those of the benzodiazeplnes. A benzodlazepine agonist midazolam and low doses of a specific benzodiazepine antagonist, Ro 15-1788, reversed the discriminative effects of 8-CCE. Higher doses of Ro 15-1788 produced stimulus effects similar to ~-CCE. In a separate experiment, monkeys responded to terminate intravenous infusions of 8-CCE, but not mldazolam. This averslve effect of 8-CCE was~ reversed by RO 15-1788. The behavioral effects of 8-CCE in these non-human primates are consistent with other data that have shown it to act on benzodiazepine receptors, and support the hypothesis that 8-CCE can be considered an inverse agonist at this receptor.

Pre-training anandamide infusion within the basolateral amygdala impairs plus-maze discriminative avoidance task in rats

Endocannabinoids (eCBs) modulate a variety of brain functions via activation of the widely expressed CB1 receptor. One site of high density of this receptor is the basolateral amygdala (BLA), a structure involved in the formation of aversive memories. The activation and blockade of CB1 receptors by systemic or hippocampal drug administrations have been shown to modify memory processing. However...

A genetic link between discriminative fear coding by the lateral amygdala, dopamine, and fear generalization

The lateral amygdala (LA) acquires differential coding of predictive and non-predictive fear stimuli that is critical for proper fear memory assignment. The neurotransmitter dopamine is an important modulator of LA activity and facilitates fear memory formation, but whether dopamine neurons aid in the establishment of discriminative fear coding by the LA is unknown. NMDA-type glutamate receptor...

Responses of tonically active neurons in the monkey striatum discriminate between motivationally opposing stimuli.

The striatum is involved in the control of appetitively motivated behavior. We found previously that tonically active neurons (TANs) in the monkey striatum show discriminative responses to different stimuli that are appetitive or aversive. However, these differential responses may reflect the sensory qualities of the stimulus rather than its motivational value. In the present study, we sought t...

The enigma of conditioned taste aversion learning: stimulus properties of 2-phenylethylamine derivatives.

The functional aversive stimulus properties of several IP doses of (+/-)-amphetamine (1.25-10 mg.kg-1), 2-phenylethylamine (PEA, 2.5-10 mg.kg-1, following inhibition of monoamine oxidase with pargyline 50 mg.kg-1) and phenylethanolamine (6.25-50 mg.kg-1) were measured with the conditioned taste aversion (CTA) paradigm. A two-bottle choice procedure was used, water vs. 0.1 % saccharin with one c...

Sex differences in aversive memory in rats: possible role of extinction and reactive emotional factors.

Studies usually show better spatial learning in males and stronger emotional memory in females. Spatial memory differences could relate to diverse strategies, while dissimilar stress reactions could cause emotional memory differences. We compared male and female rats in two emotional (classical emotional conditioning and aversive discrimination memory) and two emotionally "neutral" tasks: (1) p...
